This is not mere historical particular authorial intentionality. Treier also points out that, for Frei, Calvin functions as the ideal precritical reader who models a sophisticated “figural reading.” It is important to note that the Reformers—probably especially Calvin—did not generally speak of “multiple senses” in the medieval sense, though they clearly held to a thicker sense of Scripture than that which develops in the modern period.
